depends on what kind of filters you use.. if its a wet/dry sump you are fine, if its a canister or HOB you need to remember to raise your intake (in the tank) that leads to your canister/filter about midway along the back of your tank.. that way if you have a fish that looooves to sift its not kicking sand straight into the intake-into your canister only to get caught in the impeller and burn up the motor.
you can also get a big sponge to cover your intake.. it will help keep sand out.. i would recommend using pool filter sand-its a little heavier, larger grain.. and cleaner than that sand you get at the hardware store..
