I read this on another forum and found it interesting. Does this sound right ewurm?
'07 Patriots = '98 Vikings
These teams are so similar, it's scary.
First of all, it starts with the "Randy Moss" factor. He is getting high throws from Brady just like Cunningham would throw to beat out smaller cornerbacks- just chuck it deep in the air and see what happens. Donte Stallworth is Cris Carter- making the small touchdown passes that matter when the focus gets on Moss. Wes Welker is Chris Walsh- fighting for the yards up the middle. Laurence Maroney is Robert Smith- not impressive but can get the yards to give the offense a chance. The defense did not have many stars (a couple), but worked hard as a unit to shoot down opponents- very similar to the Patriots.
The offense put up astronomical scores that year and would keep piling on (I believe they scored 62 points against Jacksonville). The "shoot to kill" philosophy that Dennis Green used during that year came back to haunt them against Atlanta in the NFC Championship Game. They wanted to keep throwing to build up a lead when they probably should have run the ball late in the second quarter to run out the clock. That led to the Cunningham fumble which changed the momentum of that game and, as you all know, favored Minnesota shocked the world by failing to reach the Super Bowl that year (newspapers had been printed welcoming the Vikings to the championship game).
I think the Pats will finish 14-2 or 15-1 just like the Vikings did and will be the favorite to sweep the playoffs (especially if they have home field advantage- nobody wanted to play at the Metrodome like many don't want to play at Gillette). But they are ticking off a lot of players (just like the Vikings did) by running up the score and that gives opponents an extra incentive to go out there and play their all. If anybody has watched "NFL's Greatest Games", Atlanta is quick to point out Minnesota's "arrogance and cockiness", which drove Atlanta to play tough hard nosed football and eventually conquer the Vikes. The Vikings had so many blowouts during the season that when it came to playing a close game, they simply did not have the grit to play tough games like Atlanta faced all season in reaching their 14-2 record (and in playing in the shadow of Goliath, sound familiar?).
