Official Cichla Intermedia Grow Out Thread!!

Intermedia aren't more prone to HITH than any other cichla. This is a common misnomer as the batch that made these fish famous back in the day were kept in subpar conditions and just about all of them came down with it in the importer's tanks.

I don't believe r1ridah bought his intermedia with hith but it later developed hith. It was also the only fish in his tank to get hith. I believe his intermedia came from the amazon don who had a really nice setup from what I remember.

I personally never experienced hith with any of my fish but I keep my water parameters in check, feed my fish quality foods, and I don't run carbon which might all have something to do with it.

They can also get hith from hardwater, wild caught softwater fish are prone to hith in hardwater ime.

I run an RO unit so it should strip most minerals that make tap water on the harder side. I have to pick up a DKH test to figure out exactly what my water hardness registers at.

Quick questions fellas. I know hith is common with intermedia. I have a couple on order and I'm curious if well water is ok for them? We do put salt in the well water to help soften it. Couldn't remember if intermedia were better in hard or soft water conditions.

All cichla do better in soft water. Test your TDS from your tap. You can get a pen off of amazon prime for about 15 bucks. Well water tends to have heavy minerals. Try keeping your water clean and feed them quality foods and see what happens.

Thank you guys. Also what is the best food to feed them as far as pellets? I used to feed my old orinos hikari jumbo sticks and massivore delights

Hikari and NLS seem to be the most popular but I may venture out and give a few other brands a try.
