OFFICIAL Dorado taxonomy discussion thread & the answer to the big head question

Usually with Dorado it's not the fish that intimidates its tank mates, it's the movement. They swim non stop, just pacing the tank back and forth. The same thing happens with groups of Tor.

That's another reason I'd recommend dithers. When there's a group of dithers established in the tank then the movement is there and the tank mates are used to it, without them then there may be bickering back and forth while the established tank mates get used to seeing constant movement in the tank.

I really like the Lemon finned Barbs as dithers, and the Brycon Melen SP work really well too IF you can find them. Although I'm not sure how big the Lemon fins get, I expected mine to quite growing a long time ago and it's not even slowing down. Balas are great too if you can find them appropriately sized. Masheers work great too, but grow kind of slow.

DB or whoever else with Dorados:

What is your observed growth rate for your young Dorado?

I am considering adding a very young Dorado, say five inches or so, to my community. I've gathered from researching them that if a young Dorado is mixed with larger, confident fish they'll stop trying to establish dominance over each other and will just fall in with the larger fish.

If I could get a Dorado that's smaller than Max and Drogo and who would stay smaller than them because of a similar growth rate, I think I'd be willing to try one.

Thoughts?

I've had several dorados in the past all from fish rapps has brought in. They always seem to grow very fast in my 750 2+" a month and all have been aggressive towards tank mates. Either killing small ones or just showing aggressive behavior. Always tempted to try it again but I've had to sell or give them away once they hit 16-17".

Thanks mate. If I can find a small Dorado at a fair price at the same time as I magically have some extra money, I think I'm gonna snatch it up!

That's a good trick isn't it? Having the cash when the fish is available, always seems to be cash and no fish or fish and no cash. Somehow it works out in the end though.

MAN that's some quick growth! I think I might just wait another year or so before I try adding one then. Better to be safe than sorry!
