Official Internal Parasites Thread in Stingray (pics)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Big thanks to DavidW as he pointed out to me that they look rather like nematodes. I still haven't gotten a positive ID or heard back from zoodiver yet.

Do you think I just do a standard Prazi-Metro-Prazi quarantine regimen for 3 weeks.

they might be a little on the thin side.. but treat w prazi 4sure!! (not metro)

i had a great parasite ID site but i cant find it :( ill deff post it when i do

pm zoodiver for an ID

vamptrev, did you just do a regular dosing schedule and amount for prazi? Some recommended 2x the reg. dosage.

Thank you.

Prazi does not work on Nematodes, if that is what the truly are. At least from
what I have read.

i would do a standard dose, because that is what the directions recommend. You have a microscope, so do a regular dose and then re-test and get back to us, would love to see it work with a regular dosage rate.

I asked my friend who does teaches and performs research in bio. She says they are nematodes. Since that is the case, prazi more than likely will not do much if anything.

Metro may or may not work with these nematodes as well. This problem is pretty annoying.

I was thinking about it more in-depth today and realized that these nematodes could be coming from the earthworms. With more than a million different kinds living in just a handful of dirt, this could be the source. I re-examined the fecal matter again and found that these nematodes were not alive. This leads me to believe that they are not infested by the nematodes and could be something completely different.

I will be starting them on PraziPro by Hikari. Any recommendation as to the regimen? Should I just follow the instructions on the bottle or is there a better substitute?

i was just going to ask if they were alive, since you have the capabilities i would say put some in a dish and add some prazi and see what happens.

Interesting thread, your ray looks fine. Doesnt appear to be invested with internal parasites until u see them under microscope. Would you be able to repeat the same to fecal material of heathy rays? Perhaps these organism are harmless and occur naturally in fecal materials.

how are these rays doing since you took the shots of the fecal matter.Did they stop eating.update please

Just for reference, there are four internal parasites identified.

Monogenean trematodes (flukes)-praziquantel
Cestodes (flatworms)-praziquantel
Nematodes (camallanus and capillaria)-levamisole hydrochloride, fenbendazole, flubendazole
Flagellates (hexamita)-metronidazole

Metro is very limited in its capacity to obliterate parasites. Use praziquantel assuming we are not dealing with nematodes, a more dangerous set of parasites especially when they encyst to protect themselves from some more potent meds. If nematodes, then you need levamisole hydrochloride.

A broad spectrum parasiticide would be Jungle Anti-Parasite Medicated Food. It has levamisole, praziquantel and metronidazole. This will be much better to cover all four internal parasites that your stingrays may have.

Just out of interest, to the OP, what microscope did you use? This isn't trinocular microscope?

Edit: By the way, I do think DavidW is right. You're dealing with nematodes.
