That's really weird if you delete a picture it turns into an attachment

You are just removing the inline link to the attachment. You have to actually remove the attachment for it to not show.

How do you see an attachment while in the edit mode? I erased it when it was inline and saw no evidence it got moved to attachment.

You have to go into advanced edit mode, then scroll down to manage attachments.
