Official Off Topic Discussion Thread #1

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I was always under the impression a members worth was more than just a post count, how does a Trophy point validate that if the only criteria for being issued is your post count? What am I missing? I can't find the area that explains it.

The biggest trophy point automatically awarded in the system that came with XenForo is 20 for reaching 1,000 posts. Li and I are going to reinstate the awards system from VB4. There is a distinct possibility that there will be several new awards that we can use thanks to vastly expanded capabilities of the new software.

We intend for trophy points to be issued automatically when a member is given an award-- aka a trophy. I don't have exact numbers figured out yet, but actually getting an award issued, even the lowest award we have, would put you WAY ahead of any of the current members' trophy points count.

Thanks for the info Rob.

No problem, Tom. I'll have a post up in the staff section explaining the plan in a couple of days.

Can somebody tell me what a Trophy point is? I see I have them I don't know why or how. What's the point to this, with the likes and dislikes? Is this like that Facebook stuff my kids have? Help an old pisano out and explain this stuff to me. ;)
There's no dislikes.... only likes. lol
This trophy system is the same as another forum I'm on. You get trophy points when you get an achievement, like when you receive your first like or when you make 30 posts, or 100, or 1000.....

Look at the button at the bottom of the page "sign up to see what your friends like" if they're your friends you probably already know what they like. I just can't grasp the whole concept. If I don't know someone personally then they are not my friend. What is the point of a like? Someone can like something for the wrong reason, which then convolutes the whole concept of liking something it then becomes the anti-like. It seems very sophmoric. I was looking at my daughter's Facebook with her a while ago because I was interested in seeing what its about, one of her friends posted she had to go to the bathroom and she had the runs all night! This is the bulk of the stuff you see, nothing is privet and then she gets a buch of "likes" for it. Then someone posts something stupid and twenty people like it for its ridiculousness, so there goes that right out the window. Too much need for instant validation. Years ago I would say, Pop how'd I do? He'd say Did you take a beating? No pop. Then I guess you did OK. I know I'm out of touch, but I just don't go for this kids stuff, nonsense.

It just means that someone likes it. That individual person. Yes, sometimes people like dumb things, but hey.....

Ewww, Tom got to keep his "group name" too!

Trophy points IMO is just another version of group names. When I was checking out the features and looking at the possible rewards, they were mostly quantity of posts and likes related.

You just like stuff you agree with or find amusing because it draws more attention to the post. a post about having the runs may circulate through a small group of friends and grab a handful of likes but something truly aspiring, inspirational, fascinating etc will get likes in the millions and therefor be seen by the friends of every "millions" that liked it.

This site will likely be no different. Some funny troll comments may get a few likes because it was amusing but great posts or contributions will rise to the top in like counts.

I agree it's unnecessary but I believe it's harmless
