Small bear seem pretty easy to frighten off. I wouldn't mess with an adult bear.
I have only seen a few in the wild, and even those were nat. park bears, and probably not too agressive.
I have ridden the bike through to Moro Rock in Sequoia, seeing bears close up, on both sides of the one-lane road.
I had to stop, as a small tour bus blocked the road. I'm sitting on the motorcycle taking photos of the bears foraging, not more than 40 ft away and slightly below us to the right. The woman on back of the bike behind me starts getting excited, so we pass the bus on the left, on this very narrow road.
The left side was a steep embankment, and as we pass there are three more bears to the left, walking along the crest 20 ft above us and not 20 ft from the road.
That's me off the same road, on the "tunnel log loop."
Momma bear is curious.
She has a cub as well . . .
I am as far from that fallen tree as this bear. He's not going to charge me. I'm behind a tour bus with 30 noisy passengers taking photos too, I'm on a lightly muffled motorcycle with several more behind me.
Mommy and BooBoo were only interested in food.
