Oily Film

There is a oily type film on my water surface ,
what causes this and how do i get rid of it ?

Tank size, stocking, substrate, how long has it been there ect ect?

I'm pretty sure its caused by access protein in the water from feeding etc...

Are you removing any leftover food thats not eaten from the tank after each feeding?

90 gal 25 + african cichlids , 20-30 gal partial weekly , sun sun canister filter535 gal ph, and emperor 280 substrate is standard natural gravel

Typically it's either dead bacteria or excess nutrients/oils from food. A water change won't do anything. Just take some paper towels and lay them on the surface of the water, to pick up the "oil", then take them off. Works like a charm.

there is no left over food lol, im real careful about over feeding its been there for about a week should i clean filters, change media etc,besides a water change ?

Idk then, but I typically have to do it a couple times before it's finally gone.
