Oily Film

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Typically it's either dead bacteria or excess nutrients/oils from food. A water change won't do anything. Just take some paper towels and lay them on the surface of the water, to pick up the "oil", then take them off. Works like a charm.
thanks man! i also had an oily film on my water. water change does nothing...but your idea sounds great. i will try that if it ever happenes again.

Always had a bubbler in the tank, never had any problem with oily film. Turned it off to move some plants around, the whole surface was oily. Gone in 20 mins when I turned it back on.

If you're using a sunsun filter then doesn't it have a skimmer attachment on the intake?

yes but i cant get it close to the surface i'm going to cut the curvy tube off today so it will be up closer, and see if that helps, i also aimed the spray bar up so it agitates the surface more . I'm also plannig to add a power head or 2

I had the same problem with my sunsun so I took a section of pvc, notched it and placed it between the rim of the tank and the curved portion of the intake tube. It was enough to raise everything so the skimmer is at surface level.

this is not a problem if you have an overflow or some sort of surface skimmer.

I made a partial , did the paper towel trick , and added an air stone w good bubles, and also cleaned the filters and raised up the skimmer and it seems to have vanished :headbang2 ! so will see how it goes now
