OK experts. Got a question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yep I can see the difference. The water quality isn't the problem I assure you, the ones that aren't growing are all ones we got off the local classifieds for cheap... Granted they look a ton better than when we got them but just haven't seen the growth from these like the batch I ordered from discushauns. I got them at 2" last October and they are already 4.5"....

This leads to another question I have...... I had a pigeon blood that I was positive it was stunted, I threw it in as a dither in another tank and it took off and IMO looks very good now and is 4" +. Is it possible for a fish that isn't in the best conditions (and possibly stunted) to grow again?

Sure depending how old they are and how badly they are stunted they can start growing again. They will never fully recover but can turn out pretty decent if caught early enough. I would run a course of prazi just to see if they do have tapes.

I would order some freeze dried blackworm cubes from al over are simply discus or Dan at California blackworm and then get some beefheart flake from Dan

What's the difference between freeze dried and frozen? I would think frozen would have more nutritional value?

The freeze dried will have more concentrated nutritional value as the water has been removed. I feed live blackworms and frozen when I feel like it but freeze dried are a staple as they are way more economical

IMO, although they're bellies are fat your discus themselves are actually somewhat skinny. So I'd look at diet or the possibility they should be treated for worms/parasites... if not with meds, then possibly a garlic containing food (like NLS or Thera-A).

As far as stunting, they can catch up if they're still young. Once had a colorless runt of a pigeon blood I included in buying a group of juvies, mainly because I felt sorry for it. Took a while for it to start to do anything, but, under what I'd like to think was my good care, it eventually took off and became one of the two biggest and prettiest of the group.

As far as frozen having more nutrition than freeze dried, as mentioned above it's typically the other way around. Lot of frozen foods are mostly water, like 90% with some foods. If you do some research, freeze dried is actually nutritionally much more dense in most cases.

Also...
Ammonia nitrates are always at zero. Nitrites are 5-10ppm.
Are you sure it's not the other way around? Nitrites need to be zero. Nitrates at 5-10 would be ok, but if you have more than zero nitrites, that would be stressing your fish and would explain them not growing well.

lol those discus are stunted for sure! Triangular shape, huge eyes compared to the rest of the body...they look thin as well. If you want an honest opinion about what to do I will give one. If you like the discus, keep them, but they will never turn out to be anything spectacular or even resembling the other discus in this thread. If it were me, I would either cull them or give them to someone. I would feel guilty selling them to someone else though. Buy quality stock and raise them from the size of a half dollar (this will keep purchase price lower). Feed them 6-8 times per day, change 50% of the water each day for 4 months or so and I guarantee you will see a HUGE difference.
