u could do a heavily planted tank with p.senegalus get some alibinos and regulars. or a wolf fish never kept them but they look cool.

Do a rainbow wolf, they stay small and can have tankmates.. Maybe a rainbow wolf, and a few dwarf pikes.. Might be able to get away with a Bichir too..

I agree with Miles, Plus Piranhas ar illeagal in Ma to as far as I know.

Piranhas are illegal in MA.

Regards to wolfish, even the rainbow wolf can reach 20" and a 55g isn't really big enough for them to attain their full size - 75g is better. Though, you could always use it as an excuse to get a bigger tank...

They're also pretty aggressive and will try to tear chunks out of anything, even larger cichilds, although armoured cats tend to be safer. They will attempt to eat fish even as much as 2/3 their size. They also have an auxilliary breathing organ to allow them to migrate overland when it's raining, so will try and escape from your tank and then make mincemeat out of the fish in any other tanks they manage to get into.

You also need to keep the temp above 75f and over filter if poss because they're very messy. Although water quality won't bother them as much as it would the other residents. Oh, plus they're nocturnal so not ideal if your looking for something interesting to watch.

On the other hand, they are pretty cool fish and the hi-fins in particular are very nice to look at. I think you can get them for under $30. I don't know the legal status though, although I suspect that they're possibly more acceptable than piranhas because they find it harder to survive even in Florida, where several caused havoc until a cold spell killed them off (Cold spell in Florida?!)

Did I mention that they were brackish?

How about
Batrachus trispinosus (freshwater toad/lion fish - actually brackish....around 12", likes to hide, venemous so don't poke him )?
