Whay don't you build a fish highway connecting the two tanks? I'd say it's a more interesting way to waste you're time and the end result would also be fairly unique..
What the heck! I have never seen one of those for real before, only in the movies! Do the fish seem to like it or avoid it? If you want to try with the 2 -10 gal. tanks go for it, personally it seems more trouble than it's worth. But then again thats not really the point is it? Go for it !
