Don't worry, I'm not mad. I thought starrfish71's response explained to you what a hybrid was, so I found your earlier comment a tad dismissive. My apologies. :)

No you NAILED it perfect girl! Some people are just lame fish snabs! But oh well just means more for those of us who are not:woot:

It's all the same to me. I just cannot see name calling and judging someone else for their personal preference. Just seems liek a childish move.

If someone likes one thing leave them alone.. If some one likes dyed fish how is it your business? You have abominations who calls you names? Becaues we do not see the whole picture with cross breeding we are obviously going to be blinded by the fact that we are doing the same thing as these peole cutting off the tails...

Personally I don't. My Oscars tail is cut. I know someone cut it, but i did not know this or anything like this when i bought it.. So please look at the arguementsd for what they are. The same thing. It is exactly like cuttin the dogs tail and ears. Except you hear the dog whine and cry.. How is this different? The tail is the dogs balance..

This topic is long since over done. Too many people do not have the maturity to look past the name calling and present a responsible arguement. Have a nice day>

Please just answer me a question.. I am not trying to start problems or anything... but I just dont see what the big problem is with Hybrids.

The dyed/Injected/Mutilated fish I can totally understand why everyone (including myself) is against it... But Hybrids are just two different types of fish who breed together... Its like 2 dogs making babies.. it happens all the time.. I am Italian and my husband is Portuguese... so our daughter is a sort of "Hybrid" right?

Or are Hybrids made some other way and I am just ignorant? I just dont get it?
I don't care for hybrids or even "fancy" breeds (except guppies) but with me it is just a matter of taste, I also don't care for oscar but love long, lean fish and eels.
I never saw the reason for people to get upset about hybrids the way they do either

CUT the TAIL?????
WHY????
That seems NUTS to me.
IS it a fad??
Please explain...I hate to be ignorant.

ive always thought hybrids are acceptable. lotsa FH look absolutely stunning.

not too sure i understand why anyone would really want to own a fish that was hacked up on purpose. ruthless

It makes them heart shaped (the few that survive), there is a genetic sport that looks like that and they are pricey so the cut up ones are pretty much counterfeits.

To reject hybrids is as good as saying ALL listed fish species were not hybrids before they were discovered. Aren't modern day discus hybrids? The bullterrier's a pedigree but it's a known fact that it's originated from crossing different dog breeds.

some go for the purebreeds some go for the hybrids. to each his own i say... ;)
but hobbyists must be responsible enough not to endanger nature when making these hybrids...

There is a difference between hybrids and discus. Fish like discus, angels, etc. are selectively bred for certain traits, like color or finnage. For example, if you wanted to develop a long finned strain, you would choose two parent fish with longer than average fins and breed them. You would keep doing this until the desired fin length is reached.

Hybrid fish result from the breeding of two or more fish from completely different species. Instead of having two angelfish parents with longer than normal fins or discus parents with exceptional color, a hybrid may have one parent that is a JD and another that is a Texas Cichlid.

Also, like someone said earlier, dogs are all of the same species, Canis familiaris. It's like comparing it to a person with a black mom and a white dad - definately NOT hybrid.

Anyways, I am not personally against hybrid fish. I don't see any reason to be against it, provided the offspring are not deformed or anything from the cross. Hybrid animals can occur in nature, so why should they not be able to be bred in aquariums?
