This is a little dude that I recently bought. I'm reading this forum like crazy and I think I have a pretty good handle on what needs to be done. I've never changed water this often in my life. :)

I'm kind of worried about the tail. It seems to be getting bigger and more colorful so thats good but is this something that I really need to do something different about?

I know that I'm totally a noob on stingrays but I'm a fairly experienced fishkeeper and I hope to surprise you guys with my dedication and how fast I pick things up. I'm not taking this lightly. Thanks for any and all comments and advice.

He's about 6 in. diameter and in a 180g tank with decent filtration. I've been reading up on algae scrubbers. A guy was telling me about them recently. I might build one. Anyone ever tried this? If it works it could be brilliant.

Any thoughts on the tail?

He was slightly skinnier when I got him. His tail looked a little thinner too but I've been pretty much taking the advice of everything I've read here. He seems to look a little better. He moves around a lot and eats like he forgot when his last meal was. I've been working pretty hard to get the ammonia down to zero but I haven't been able to get it quite there yet. Maybe part of that was because I disrupted the cycle when I took everything out of the tank. But I hope to get there soon enough. Besides how awesome this ray is...having a 180g gives me the perfect justification to go bigger in the future. I have an indoor pond available but I don't own it. It would be better if I just build my own pond...right? I don't need convincing. I just need to convince my wife and so far she seems to really like this ray. :)

Why the hell did you add any fish, let alone a ray when the water has ammonia reading?? Should have continued to cycle the tank before adding ray.
Better to do lots of water changes...

Tank was decorated so prolly cycled and the ray did what rays do and surprised the owner with how much ammonia it could produce.

OP add 2 teaspoons of any type of salt to the water. It will prevent nitrite poisoning during the cycle. Replace what is removed when you change water. Even table salt is fine just dissolve the salt in tank water before adding it.

New to Rays myself, so no long-term advise on 'em other then he's a cute lil' guy! as for the ammonia if your only getting trace amounts just keep plugging away on the water changes!
