I'm glad everyone seems to think he looks healthy. I was thinking he looked pretty good but just wanted more knowledgable opinions. And I'm getting there on the water. Have any of you guys ever used algae scrubbers? I don't have one but I've been reading about them lately.
Algae scrubbers - are you talking about building an area outside of the tank to purposely propogate algae to deter algae growth within the tank and reduce nitrate levels? If so, I know it works - my buddy uses this method and produces a ton of algae that he feeds to his fish. Neat idea, really.
I don't think it really deters growth inside the tank but it's supposed to remove ammonia, nitrates and nitrites and reduce water changes. I don't know if all of that is true but it's interesting. It needs to be built to very specific standards to work properly. I called my electric company about the lighting requirments and they told me it would cost me about $10/month to run.
If anyone cares to know, I was wrong about scrubbers deterring algae growth in the tank. I guess they do. I presume this is because the algae lives on the "bad" things in the water and by removing those things the scrubber is taking away food from the would-be algae in the tank. That would tell me that these things must be pretty effective in cleaning water.
imo nothing really can reduce water changes... your still going to run into TDS issues down the road if you don't. Now with a TDS meter in hand.... you may be able to significantly decrease your need for water changes by following the TDS instead of nitrate build-up ( which would be almost non-existant so imo def worth doing if you have the desire too) I don't have an algae scrubber set-up but I do have a planted tank that reads 0's but can def tell when my TDS starts going up the fish ( feeder guppies xd w/ fancies/ so pretty hearty fish and the rest relatively non-delicate species) all start gasping and showing signs of stress ( took me a long time to figure out what the tanks "issue" was) everything but my TDS was always giving perfect water readings. I increased the water changes and now everything is flourishing again.
Hes nice almost just like my female except she just has more pattern to her you'll see how fast rays grow on you but just make sure to get the ammonia down ASAP GL!!
