Ok lets try this again, What the heck is this fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I told you Aquamojo was the man to talk to, the guy is like a Vieja Encyclopedia!

Good job Aquamojo.. that definitly looks like the fish

his fish has a different head shape than the fish Aquamojo posted, though. Also i see alot of red on the OPs fish where as the fish Aquamojo posted has no red at all. Im not objecting, just pointing out something i noticed difference wise. you say you fished him out of one of your friends vats, does he have no idea what was in there? i mean is there any chance that maybe there WAS some Tuyrense in there at one time? i mean it came from a vat right? what else was in the vat?

What else was in the vat is the question to ask for sure.

As for color...that depends on the photo as much as the fish. I can assure you I can get more "color" out of a fish with my lighting set up.

Identifying these vieja/paratheraps type fish...especially juveniles...can be difficult. Even something as simple as color. Willem Heijns posted a series of photos on the various "favors" of bifasciatum. There were a dozen different fish all with dramatic and some subtle differences. You cant even fully rely on markings. For example if i said black belt cichlid, what would you look for? Yet we collected a variant of Maculicada in Jutiapa Honduras that had no visible belt. Variant of BB? Or some new species? Look at my P "coatzacoalcos". Undescribed. New fish or variant of Zonatus?

I they didn't have tureyense than no chance...hybrid or otherwise. It's not a very common fish.

Looks nothing like my Bifa, it doesnt even have the horizontal stripe. which is a characterising trait.
but seriously young vieja all look the same except for the arrangement or absence of black striping and subtle hue and fin colouration. from the 2" mark the fish will look the same until its about 6"-7" thats when most start colouring up. as Aquamojo said there are many differing looks from the same species, the whole Vieja species are being broken up as time goes on. such as now the Synspilus is supposed to be called Melanarus now or something? because apparently instead of using the name everyone knows they just changed it to the lesser known fish... makes very little sense.

anyway here is my Bifa, so you can see how our fish look different yet similar (because they are both Vieja species)
