So, after looking for a while, I finally purchased, what I believe to be a healthy Retic. What I mean by that, is one that has been in a shop long enough to either die from disease or start eating and fatten up. I think I got lucky, because those things are never around long enough at the LFS to go one way or the other. I got this little male a couple days ago, and he appears to be healthy. Now comes the part I am always tentative about, the LFS fed him ghost shrimp, which is great, at least he ate, but I want him to convert to pellets like my other rays. I do not want to starve him because with my luck, that will end badly! Should I just be happy he is eating at all? So if anyone has any tricks, please let me know.

Not to be rude but... if you converted your other rays to pellets you shouldn't have any problems. Those pellets are huge and if he is a newly acquired Ray then you probably shouldn't offer pellets yet. I would start with ghost shrimp, black worms, chopped red wigglers. then work on market shrimp, tilapia and then pellets. Make sure to remove all UN eatin food. And keep up on your water changes. Do you mind posting a full tank shot?

I hear you, the other pellets are for the motoro that he shares a tank with, and all of my other rays came pellet trained. He is eating black worms and nightcrawlers, and I agree those pellets are huge.

retics seem to be very difficult to transfer onto new foods. best advice id give is get him eating something until he is in very tip top condition. then start pellet training. i had mine on live black worms and ghost shrimp for a month or so, then chopped night crawlers for another 2 months, then tilapia for another couple months, and now im soaking hikari carnivore pellets in the tilapia juice. they still have not taken to the pellets but thats all they are being offered. they will have to take them eventually. at least right now after 2 weeks of this they are munching and spitting out the food so they'll be any day now. my black rays transferred in no time at all. these retics are very finicky!! best of luck.

I'm no expert AT ALL, but from the pic it looks like he's thin, and is starting to "curl." Correct me if I'm wrong. From that pic, it doesn't look very healthy compared to what I'm used to seeing on here.

I got two healthy retics few months ago, they do well on mysis shrimp and bloodworms. They are constantly exposed to pellets and different fish filets, but so far they just back off when they smell it.
I could see a bit of the pelvic bones on the female when i bought them, but other than that she seemed ok. Now she is nice and fat like the male, and she eats like a horse! The moment i started to give them mysis she gained mass right away.

I will definitely give the mysis shrimp a try. From what I can see of the ray, he is quite active and is eating well, I hope that he doesn't have any curl.
