First off im new so would like to say hi to everyone. My problem is i already have aquarium salt in my tank at 1 tbs per 5 gallons and i have a fish who i think is constipated so i want to add epson salt to help.Is it ok to mix these and if so how much. Also i do have some scaleless fish if that matters.
The fish hangs at the bottom and doesnt have much interest in eating, actually hasnt eaten in 5 days.Every once in a while he will swim over and take food but spit it right out.He doesnt seem bloated at all or look like hes starving either.
It is a mixed african tank with,Mbunas, peacocks and Victorian haps and hes the second peacock in a month to act this way.The other one i gave away so i dont know what the end result or treatment was. They thought he was just bullied but ive never seen anyone pick on him or this one.
Water quality is great and aerated just fine.Any suggestions

You might want to do a 20% water change and then add the epsom salts to be safe. Although I have added epsom on top of regular salt, in a central american cichlid tank without adverse incident.

Epsom salts are best used as a dip, not as an additional treatment for the main tanks. Get a spare tank or bucket and treat there.

Fisheater, are you adding aquarium salt all the time? If so, please stop it. Aquarium salt will never prove beneficial to the fish in the long run. You risk producing pathogens that are resistant to the presence of salt such as ich.

I have always added aquarium salt,i thought that was the right thing to do:eek:.When i do my water change in the morning i was thinking of not putting in aquarium salt and mixing in the epsom but now i feel like laying off the aquarium salt!
Thanks guys,i just wish i new what caused this situation because i really like the peacocks and there costly.

Your cichlids will be fine without any salt added in their tank. If you're treating though, just do it in a spare tank and use epsom salts for dips only.

I appreciate it and will start adding salt free on my water changes. As of right now i dont have a hospital tank but my son has a 10 gallon with 1 angel fish,1 killefish,a pleco and dojo loach,if i put him in there and added the epson salt do you think it would hurt the other fish much?Hes also a little more lively this evening-chasing folks-but he still didnt eat.:nilly:

Your fish do not need to be involved. Get a 5g. Always have a spare tank for a quarantine or hospital purpose. Many diseases are introduced via unquarantined specimens. Always quarantine your new arrivals.

Im giving my boys a 29 gallon this week and using the 10 for a hospital tank.Ive got lucky so far adding fish without quarantine....maybe.It seem either i bought 2 sick peacocks or there is something about my overall set up they dont like,at first they were both agressive eaters and then all of a sudden nothing!Great color and dont look sick?
Any way thanks for your suggestion and help.:)
