Watch out for tank mates. Cons can be quite nasty when it comes to protecting their young. But congrats! A deep water change can trigger mating in cichlids a lot of times. Convicts don't usually need much persuasion in this arena. They're like rats with fins.

I second this.

I thought mine would be okay with a midnight catfish. They decided that they wanted the catfish's cave so they ate his eyes and tore him up really bad :(. Not to mention they would violently attack the alpha convict in the tank if they saw her/knew where she was.

Mate, there way past eggs, i got babies
Should be a prize for the only one to say ones a female in my opinion :D
anyways, well pictures, there not to great as the babies only push about 2mm, but there about a hundred :)
Babys are the kinda black areas on the sand (and glass is kinda being left dirty now as i do not wish to disturb them, good call or bad call?)

Nyghtfire:

Congradulations all the way around in all cases related to your Convict Cichlids. Great call on not selling or separating your breeding pair. Good call on not cleaning the tank too, let them settle down for at least 3 days before you clean off the outside of your tank. Just care for them well and they will reap you rewards in the longrun.

Now as they get bigger, are you going to need a different tank for the fry, so they can grow out or will they be fine with their current home? I just thought I'd toss out that bit of a question so if you have to, you can start planning now.

Good luck with you new family and may they bring you much happiness and enjoyment.

At the moment when they do hit full size i will need a fry tank to grow them up a bit, but i'm really breeding them for feeders, not for myself yet, but i know someone who's always happy to take feeders, and i'm not charging him anything so sall good :)
probably should though, let him pay for a grow out tank :P

Going to agree with a few folk here, and congrats with the fry !!
I do pretty much the same as you. I have a 40gal. stocked 1m 4f (about 1 1/2" - 3" each)
simple Geo substrate and slate rock stacked for lots of caves... I usually keep the fry in the current breeder tank for about three week before I move them anywhere. Usually my rule of thumb is just that!! Once the fry sit about the size of my thumb nail I move them. Either right to my Channa tank or to my friends that are looking for something a bit cleaner then comets.

Keep up the good work:)

should just add if there's anyone in the Perth area who wants them, for feeders or pets, by all means send a pm, BUT i won't give them to anyone who i feel is not capable of caring for them until such time they are fed to there fish or in general for pets....
I'm comfortable with feeders, but I'm not giving away a bunch to be stuck in a tiny tank for pets :)

talkin about convicts, my pair laid eggs over the weekend while i was gone. i think there startin to hatch to. so congrats and good luck with yours!
