Because I happen to occasionally clean my tanks, and sucking water out of them via Python will cause the level to drop :screwy:

Don't tell me that you guys actually shut your filters off each time you do a water change

I absolutley shut my emps off when i clean my tanks, never had a problem so far, the few times that i have not , say if i do a quick small water change it has never been a problem.................THINK about it if you are doing a major water change you are going to go below the intake ,......thus your intake will be sucking air.....not water.......which is definatly not good for the filter and will likely break it eventualy.........;)

I have always shut my filters off for a water change.

Ok, I guess as they say "live and learn"... I am quite shocked. In a decade of my fish keeping experience I have ALWAYS did waterchanges with all filters running. I never let the water level drop bellow intakes, so accidential sucking of the air was never an issue. Perhaps it all depends on a specific tank maintenance regimen of each individual? I have always cleaned my tanks every single week, performing a 30-50% waterchange, thuse there was never a need to shut filters off (or so I thought). I would imagine that when you have to drain more water out, leaving filters on would not be an option.

On the other hand, maybe this is exactly why my Emperors begin underperforming after only a couple of years of ussage
