Old Jacuzzi for Indoor Pond?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have an old jacuzzi I use as a pond and it works great. Its outside and under a deck so plants don't grow in it. I keep goldfish (about 24) in it. The depth is a good thing because it keeps the racoons out. I see their footprints everywhere! About a year ago the the plumbing basically blew. Leaking everywhere so I sealed the jets and built a homemade filter out of a 5 gallon bucket, pump and filter media. No heater needed for goldfish. Cleaning is easy with the slick surface but, so is falling in with algae! Its fun to see the goldfish come to you when you feed them. I even put some guppies in and the goldfish hunted them down like little oscars! I'd recommend one.

A spa could be used, but it would not be my first choice. People have already mentioned some of the shortfalls of usiing one as a pond. I recently put in a large spa that is 80"x80"x34". Due to the seats and contours actual volume is only about 300 gallons, while a pond of those dimensions would be almost 1,000 gallons. I bought mine off of CL after several months of looking. Most of what you see for under $500 is garbage once you actually go see it. Not even fit for a pond. You may come across a free one that someone just wants gone and it would be worth a try. Something I did not realize was empty a large one is 800+ pounds, not an easy move. I think it would seem neat at first, but ultimately a purpose built pond would be a much better decision.
