Great looking dempsey man, my favorite fish. What did you feed him most of his life, and although you moved him around alot, what were his water/changes like?

I'll agree that once they get past 5-6 inches they seem to start to mellow out. I have a 6" that I got from a LFS that was rather beat up. Just tattered fins, so it seemed like he was passive. When I put him in my tank it was confirmed he was relatively peaceful. My 4" firemouth flared and chased him for 30 minutes. I was just about ready to separate them when JD decided he had enough, and turned around and called the firemouth's bluff. They lip locked for 5 seconds. That 5 seconds was all it took. The next day the firemouth's lower lip was visibly bruised up badly. After another day or 2 the firemouth's lower lip/jaw fully healed, but the firemouth never tried that again. Anytime JD would roll around he'd swim out of his way.

Gentle giants for sure. There does seem to be the odd homicidal one, but most seem calm. I definitely see where the name comes from though. They're calm but if you back them into a corner with no other option they'll come out swinging just like a boxer and have the power to back it...

He's actually never been moved lol. He's been taken out and put in a bucket for a few hours but that tank has been his home. He was raised mainly hikari cichlid gold with brine shrimp as a second staple. The water change schedule when he was younger wasn't good lol. My father was in control of the tank at that time and he's old school so he usually just topped of the water and vacuumed it every few months. That lasted for at least 5 ish years then I took control and upgraded filtration and increased water changes to weekly. I'm honestly surprised it's lived as long as it has

Great job taking over with the care of the Dempsey, that's why he still looks good and thriving.:)

Usually old man JD develops a crooked back. His body still looks young. Getting 11 year out of him is a record. Mine lived 8 to 9 years maximum, and mellowed out a lot as they aged.

This. Any old Jack Dempsey I've seen had a pretty crooked back.

not sure where we mark old man JD, i am sure 11 years makes that cut. great looking old guy by the way, GJ!! Haneble Lector (sp) getting on 4 and not humped back, YET. yet being the key word here.

Looks fantastic, personally I'd have thought that not developing the crooked back after 11 years, he won't be inclined to; but who knows
