Old Old convict.

Epic thread, this really makes me want to start the breeding project I had as an idea a while back. To supply good quality cons, and not the inbred ones I see far too often.

Attached a pic of my young male con below. He replaced my other guy who died, when he got ill; some suggested it was a good thing cause he was a convict.

Misunderstood fish! Though they can be pains to other fish, yes.

Nice thread.

Convicts are great little fish. The most common cichlid by far (maybe oscars beat them) but common for a reason. When cared for, and in a community setting (large enough tank to hold multiple pairs or a bunch of one sex) they look amazing.

I don't have a photo, but in a pet store couple of years ago, I saw a 7-8 inch fish that I thought was a young midas. It had long trailing fins and a pretty impressive nauchal hump. Their resident fish 'expert' said someone had brought it in a few days ago, and that it was a male pink convict. It was bulky too, which made it seem even bigger. I was impressed to say the least.

Here is my pair of Convicts. I raised them in a central American tank and they paired off rather quickly. The only cichlid that ever challenges the male is a quarrelsome short bodied Texas... but he backs down pretty fast. Don't mess with my con! I have since overhauled these plants. Too much light is bad haha.

I should mention the first pic, he is triple the size of the rest from the same batch. Pushing 1.25" or so. He got moved to the 125 grow out. He is in with some roudy fish as large as 6"... he does not care and won't be pushed around even by the Oscar that could easily swallow him haha!
