Old Pacus, New Arowana

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So you feed the Pacus feeders? Feeders can carry diseases, and Pacus are omnivores, thought it is heavily slanted towards mostly being herbivores. I'd do a 90%:10% ratio of plant matter:meat. It'd be much better for them if you got them onto vegetables, and fed some shrimp, worms, octopus, fillet, crickets, once a week at most.

Gshock. in you opinion - The 2feet length would take how long for the aro to grow? we got him at about 3" and he has grown to 12+ within about 4 - 5 months.

He is very comfortable in the pond. but we cant see his beautiful orange sides....

one of my worries, is the advantage the pacus have from the position from below. When fed. they shoot to the surface with such speed- if the feeder doesnt run away quickly he gets soaked with the splash! I feel like they can attack him from below.

the pics i have are from 2005. really do need to get some updated ones. but here are a few.

The aro will only take a few more months to reach 24" but I think you would be fine. The feeding behavior of the pacus will make the arowana jump, a completely sealed top is a must.

16" !!!! sheesh.

Are you saying the arowana is 16"? If so, Wow!! What are you feeding that guy?

Like Bderick has said, a few more months and your aro should reach about 24".

I think he's referring to the 16" jump height another member posted for a 1' aro. To be honest, when the aro grows bigger, it'll be impractical to try and match it's jump height with a board as it'll be jumping a couple feet up if it wanted to. If possible, it's better if you just do a sealed top like Bderick has suggested.

why not just wait 6 more months till the aro is 18+ inches. although i would think he would be fine. i would put a cover on the tank and weight it down. the aro will jump out. i promise.

I've had 1' pacus completely shred 2' fish before. You can try it, but if you see aggression, separate immediately and don't try again. Mine do fine with each other, but one out of the bunch feels the need to kill anything that isn't a pacu. Before I added that one, the others did fine with a whole spectrum of tankmates. I guess it is the risk you take.

To Jux, sorry but you are incorrect. There are some that act JUST like piranhas. I have one.

And lastly, an aro tank needs to be covered corner to corner, edge to edge and heavily weighted or strapped down. Otherwise it is just a matter of time before you have aro jerky. A good rule of thumb for SA aros is 3x their body length is their ability to jump.

yup! there are vids on utube of wild adults jumping 1 meter to catch insects on trees. no wonder the natives call them 'water monkeys'

2 feet shouldnt take long, about 3-4 months, depending on the food
i would feed tenebrius giga, live fish & earthworms for quicker growth. how big is this pond hes in?

dont rush, be patient. better late & safe than rushed and worried. if I WERE U,i would put him in and take a few days in vigilante mode, just to check at what level of agression these pacus really are...just out of curiosity

i'm sorry the tank is approx. 1500gallons. it flows down into a concrete pond of similar volume (where the arowana is presently) - which then flows into 3rd pond of the same volume again.

i think from what is said here.. the fish needs to stay in the pond.

the aquarium is also viewed from above and so cant be covered.

thank you all for the help.

the pacu a fed a variety of pellets, flakes and cat food mixed in small proportions. They get lots of veggies from the kitchen. no live feeders from external sources. guppies are thrown in on occasion from the ponds.
