Hey! Does anyone still use any of the older, more "inferior" gear like air driven corner box fiters, sponges, UGF, etc?

Don't know why you'd call them inferior. I have 100+ tanks running on a single blower to sponge filters. I also use corner box filters that hold chemipure. I don't have any problems with my setup.

sponge filters are only useful as bio filtration, they dont offer any mechanical filtration right?

To certain extend yes they do provide mechincal filtration.:D

do you have to replace the filter media inside them, then?
There's no filter media in there. Just a sponge looking filter.;)

im thinking of the filter where its hooked up to an air pump, and its just a plastic shell in which you add some sort of media, like cotton/carbon etc, and the bubbles exit the top of the device and thereby create surface movement

I rotate through all of the sponge filter and rinse them off to clean the mechanically removed material from them. The corner filters get their media replaced the same as any other filter. Chemipure lasts ~ 3 months. The bags are replaced on that schedule. Gravel washes, water changes, and proper stocking take care of the rest.

Ooohh...those. usually I add ceremic rings or volcano chips plus filter wool.;)

No! I love the old stuff! I get made fun of because I still buy and use the little "bubblers." In fact, I drove my wife nuts trying to find a Lustar Jumbo Bottom Filter that has been out of production for about two years now. I finally did find them and bought two.
