India
Getting started with a new tank setup is like an adventure by itself.

I live in India in a tiny little flat of 1800sq ft with my wife and daughter. I used to live with my grandmother and i had converted her terraced orchid garden to my own fish room.

The setup i had there was:
6x2x2: Banjar red aro, clowns and polyps
6x2x2: African haps
3x1.5x1.5: Oscar
3x1.5x1.5: Jaguar
5x2x2: Flowerhorn
4x2x2: Red texas

I started slow with just a couple of tanks. Then i got married and my wife fell in love with fishes or my love for fishes and then began the new entries. That mini terrace was a sight to behold :)

Then after the birth of my daughter we soon moved out to a flat of 1800 sq ft. Space was a luxury and i sold/gave off all my tanks and fishes except for the banjar red in his 6x2x2. I bought a 46"x15"x20" moulded aquarium set and got the red texas home.

He died a few years after that.

After growing tired of single fish tank setups, i changed it to an active tank with tiger barbs, tetras and loaches. Was nice for a while before the yearning for predators started to come back. Slowly the barbs and tetras gave way and Oscars came into the picture. After growing them up, sold them off and got in a severum and a tiny teeny buttikoferi. The LFS didn't know which fish it was and i had to ask him if he will survive the severum. Pfft.

Pretty soon the butti outgrew the severum and became lord and master of the tank. After beating the severum to a pulp, sold him off back to the LFS along with the injured severum.

And i introduced my 3 indo dats who were in a 20G growout tank into the main tank. Somewhere i got a couple of sailfins, one royal, one blue phantom. All juveniles. Sailfins grow pretty fast and pretty soon they will be going into my 180G with the banjar red.

Now that we have caught upto the present, i have a situation. The stand has started to wither in places and has bulges. Needless to say, it is a cause for concern and initially i was planning only on replacing the stand. But the lady of the house says might as well change the full setup. This tank has scratches! Who am i to argue with her ;)

Which was when i posted the other thread asking about shifting fishes from old tank to a new tank.

Anyway, the problem with living in a flat is that space is limited. There is this one place between two rooms sort of recessed inside.

The space is 58" long, 22" wide. Height usually should not be an issue but numbskull that i am, i had the electric outlet at 46.5" H. So automatically my tank setup height gets restricted to that.

All the tanks at the LFS were either too long or too high.

So no other option but to go custom.

Tank is going to be a 50"L x 20"W x 20"H. 12mm glass. and the LFS says braces won't be required. Yes?

Now the stand. I am not much of a DIY person and been going through google images for metal stands and thought this was something which would be ok.

Two canisters go inside. Tank would be flush with the wall so the hoses come out through the sides of the stand.

Am i on the right track?

Stock would be:
3 juvi indo dats
1 small sailfin
1 juvi sailfin
1 juvi blue phantom
1 juvi royal
3 yo-yos
6 clowns
1 juvi red severum

Current scenario: Got one pc of mopani wood and the two tetras who were survivors of a bygone era have been given off.

The stand. Thanks to google image search and the original person who made this :)

Sorry for the looooong post. Just want to make sure i don't mess up.

at 1/2" glass 50" length and 20" tall 1/2" glass would not need to be braced

Any pics of grandmother's terrace when it had all the tanks?

Guys, initially i thought i would do the stand with stainless steel but would galvanised iron be a suitable alternative?

Asking 'cos we have some GI pipes lying over and would be a lot of money saved.

Small update: The stand is almost ready and expecting the LFS guys to drop by to fix the tank at my place itself. Less of a headache.

Tank size is 50"L x 20"W x 21"H. 90 Gallons.

Two canister filters one at 370GPH and the other at 264GPH [Both Sun Suns and one with UV]. Have ordered a Hydor professional 450 which will run for a few months then i'll wean the 264GPH sun sun away.

So finally it is done. Sunday after Sunday came and went and i could find no time to get this over with. Got two people to help and completed the shifting process.

A small photo log towards completion...

The fishes seem to like this slightly bigger tank [Previous one was a 46x16x20]. Took some time to settle of course but pretty soon they were off exploring away. What was heartwarming was the sight of the three Dats, all stable and going all over the tank. Such beautiful fishes they are.

Till late in the night they were swimming around happily.

The tank looks much more clearer today morning. Fed the fishes and then a few hours later switched on the lights and what do you know, the dats went back into hiding. Sigh...

Anyway, thanks for all the tips and words of advice by everyone at MFK. Made things a lot more easier.

Looks good!

A shoal of dither fish should help bring out the dats. My little IT is always at the front glass waiting for food, even during water changes. He lives with a dozen juvi clown loaches

Yeah but need to find some good ones. Tiger barbs were a no go. It brought them out but that was over very fast.

Need to get silver dollars or rainbowfishes?
