omg Help

Ok....... I woke up this morning and my sister was visiting with her 6 month old daughter and 2 year old son.... and she was saying "please don't get mad" I asked why and she said to look out the window at the pond.


And there it was.. My nephew Raiden had poured a bottle of 2-stroke motor oil into the pond......


The first thing I did was get newspapers and started soaking it up. I used nets towels and everything I could.

The water is a shiny grey now.

Anything else I can do? I think I'm gonna have to drain the pond

Oil and water don't mix so it should all float to the top. Don't stir it up! Skim as much as possible off the top and do multiple water changes! Then......poor a quart of motor oil over his dumb little head!

It's 100% your sisters fault for not watching him! Heaven forbid, but what if he had fallen in and drowned?

Refilling it will be a problem because over here (Brisbane, Australia) we have water restrictions at the moment

Yeah, I will be draining it and hopefully we will get a storm or something to re-fill it.

Cat litter as an absorbent, dish soap to clean, rain barrels at down spouts for water and a leash with a bell on it for your nephew.

I wouldn't drain it. It is easier to clean oil off the surface. I have had a few people burn out pumps or break a seal and have oil spill into the water. Keep using the papers or any absorbant material, old towels and sheets work good. If you drain, you will basically coat the entire pond w/a thin film/layer of oil covering all surfaces. If it is drained, try to clean off EVERYTHING proir to re-filling. This means all rocks, plants, and decor.

I realize that this is on a much smaller scale, but my daughter squirted baby oil in my 5 gallon betta tank. I used a small hose and syphoned off just the top of the water. I kept it just at the waters surface and it took all of the oil out. Then I refilled the amount of water taken off and looked for oil spots and then syphoned those. I did it again and again until no oil spots appeared on the top of the water.
