So I come home from work to see a bunch of eggs from my JD/EBJD pair. It has taken me now 2 years for them to finally spawn. I see some eggs are already white, but most are clear colored. I have never successfully bread anything other than mouthbrooders so this is a whole new territory for me. Before I do anything stupid, I have a few questions...

1. When they hatch how long do I have to wait until I separate them from their parents?

2. I have an established 10 gallon tank with a small canister filter that I can put a sponge over the intake to make it safe, what are other precautions I should take when transfering the fry?

3. the JD's are in my 55 mixed juvi gallon growout tank now. is there a danger of the other fish eating the eggs?

4. I've been watching them now for about an hour and the JD's stay in their corner over the eggs without any signs of aggression, will the aggression come later or should it have already been present?

I usually leave the fry with the parents for a month but with a divider from the rest of the tank. The parents won't really attack anyone unless other fish get too close for comfort. If you wanna save the fry you can put them in the 10g when they're free swimming. Feed then boiled egg yolk or finely crushed pellets or flakes 3 times a day. Do 20% daily water changes and leave the temp around 80-82 deg. When I transferred my fry I just made sure that the tank and the fry tank are the same temp and just net them then dump them in the other tank. I think that's pretty much what you need to do for the fry. Hope I helped :)

I agree with japbart! If theres no other "threats" in the tank, I usually leave the fry with the parents untill there 1/4" - 3/8" I had a real bad experence removing fry from my EBJD/JD pair the 1st time they spawned, I removed them 2 early and the male went NUCKIN FUTS and devoured the rest of the fry, I guess he thought I was a threat and ate them in response. If you try to net the fry, that may freakout the parents too. My grandfather who got me into breeding fish, told me to use a siphon hose and gently suck the fry into the hose and transfer them into a holding tank. I have been using that method for years now and I have great success with it. I have successfully moved fry that still had their egg sacs on them with no damage to the little buggers. I wouldn't recommend moving fry that young, but sometimes you gotta do what you do.

Congrats on the spawn and goodluck with the babies

I just moved some hrp fry into a fry tank. Probably got about 15 and left the rest with the parents. They didnt even notice. They probably got so used to the turkey baster they dont see it as a threat anymore but more of a treat cause turkey baster means live bloodworms to them.

I have had little success when transferring wigglers to a 25 gallon tank. 400+ frys shrunk to about 20 many times. It is a cycled tank but seems to be unstable since it is a smaller tank. I only have success when keeping them in a 100 gallon tank. I think a smaller tank would be ok too. Many people have transferred frys to 10, 15, 20 gal tanks that is recommended with success. I don't know why it never worked for me. Good Luck with your frys!

thanks people, I have successfully moved them once they were free swimming and there are at least 100 of them now in a 10 gallon tank. I have a small cannister filter with a sponge on the inlet and plenty of aeration. the tank is bare bottom at this point so its easy for me to clean. I did see one dead fry on the bottom too.

they all look the same to me. I am about to sift through this site again to find out what kind of fry I will get. From what I remember these should be mostly BGJDs or can I expect any EBJD fry from this batch? I will post pictures of fry and the parents tomorrow.

EBJD x JD= 100% BGJD
EBJD X BGJD = 50% EBJD, 50 BGJD
But more likely 35% EBJD, 65 BGJD
