OMG! Sand people, check this out!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I tested the water today. 0 nitate, 0 nitrite, ph 7.8 (average ph in my area).

I'm going to go ahead and leave the gravel in the tank.
I'm also going to get the rock tested to see what exactly it is.

Hmm.

At least with the original post...i have always been able to get that stuff out when initially rinsing the sand.

AH....I got beat to it...that was my first thought when I saw the title of this thread....I was hoping no one else thought of it yet

I have leslies pool filter sand, and if you use a strong magnet the sand will stick to it. It won't stick to my magfloat though. Has anyone had any problems from this? Does anyone think this will be a problem in the long run? I was considering changing out the sand, but after finding this thread it looks like it might be kind of common.

So I dropped my cleaning magnet into my sand and look what I pulled out!!! All these little metal fragments from my pool filter sand.

Can other people please do this and share if they get the same results?

Luckily it doesnt seem to have effected my fish, but Ive dragged the magnet through the sand over and over again in hopes of getting it all.

My only worry is that it did effect my fish in the long term:(, even though I cant see anything from it now...

I wonder if all pool filter sand is made equally? This is why I am asking people to do the same!

It would be great if we could figure out which brands have these shards and which dont!!! Unfortunately I dont remember what brand I used!!!

do that in any sand- dirt on earth you will get that

Only issue I have with my magnet is that it can get caught between the mag float and SCRATCH THE HELL OUT OF YOUR TANK! I cant even imagine what chaos it would do if it got into a persons pump/filter....

That sucks. Mine wont stick to the magfloat, but I found out on accident that it will stick to mag-clips, which seem to have stronger magnet. With mine though its the actual grains of sand that stick, I havent had any metal fragments like you get.

I tried on my sand and nothing happened. However someone else posted a thread just today on this subject. They said they had pool sand that was supposed to be 100% silica.

edit: Oops I see you've already met.
