Ompok pabo (indian wels cat)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I see. I'd predict they will get eaten. Speed and position in water column are rather moot in the confines of a small fish tank and at night when the catfish hunts.

Quite incredible little fish aren’t they.

I was a huge fan. I got and they were like 3". Grew them to like 7-8" then had a rouge tinfoil barb attack them. That was close to 6-7 years ago and I tried so hard to find them. About 5 years ago I had two shops order them for, but the supplier was selling ompok catfish but were really blue sheethfish. The disappointment was real.

That sucks to hear man. Reach out to Wes if you are in the Us.

Been a while. My Ompok is stable. He hardly moves when the lights are on. He lays at a weird angle always. Only moves when the scent of Shrimp is presented. Anyone have a certified max size? I presume my guy is closing in on that size. I’ve heard anywhere from 10” to 16”… I would lean towards 10” ish inches.

They’re quite an odd fish. They stay still all day just like a Chinese wels. They prefer to not move even with just a sliver of light on their tank. I feed meaty foods such as shrimp squid and clam. He also eats worms. They don’t need a big tank. I have him in a 36” x 16” x 20”. So relatively not large. Just because they hardly swim. I’ve seen him swim at night once lights were off and he swims in the currents, but other than that rather a stationary fish. They aren’t picky on water temp, as I’ve ran him without a heater for a while but now I’ve raised it to 82 degrees Fahrenheit. They prefer a lot of cover, so some larger pieces of driftwood supplement this need. I’d compare caring for this guy to caring for a large Dojo loach lol. Not picky, eats whatever, and super cool.

We had 3 adult siluroides and they hovered often in and around a densely scaped dimly lit 120 gal. Had one pabda that was small and hid often but did swim around too. I wonder if your pabo would change its behavior in a different tank or with dither tank mates. Ours had a ton of tank mates too.
