pic would be good, i have seen an aro that problem, although it does not look like a live threatening desease, its ugly and sad to look at.
sounds like the desease is about to start?
if it is theres very much still a chance to fix it before u do the surgery.
i might be able to help if its not too late

It is life threatening because the gill covers play a major role in water being pumped over the gills and it is not a disease. It is a condition brought about by keeping an arowana in a tank that is too narrow for the fish to turn around without bending it's gill covers.

yes it will become life threatening if untreated for long time, just like any other desease

What about the "disease" part?

I have a friend with a Silver that is looking like it could have gill curl, what's your cure for it?

keyword is when its not too late, no when its already occured bad theres no way to fix it except surgery.
if the its soft tissue gill(the tissue after the gill itself) thats curling it is not life threatening. again gill itself dont curl.

The gill cover is what pumps water over the gills. No pumping water = very little oxygen. Very little oxygen = sick fish. Sick fish die if condition not rectified.

If you have a solution, post it up, otherwise, please stop posting in this thread.

and it's NOT a disease! Gah! :nilly:

Anyway, Back to the OP,
Have you done a search for home surgery on the Gills?
It's not something I would like to do, but I'm sure I have read somewhere about it before. (probably here at MFK)

There were 2 "cures".
1) of course the most common surgery where you just cut the whole soft membrane off and hope it grows back. It usually does unless to cut into the hard area.
2) There was another "cure" that claims gill curl can be solved by just massaging . I'll try to find the whole thread once the bassmaster classic ends.

Not completely sure if #2 will work, but #1 is almost guaranteed.

That second option was what I would suggest if its not too late, use water current to message it, powerhead with sponge would be the best tool to do the job and small tank.
Raise the water temp to the highside while treating it, within a week or 2 gill should be back to normal, again its if its not too late
If its the car gill would be the exhaust no?
And it were human it would be mouth?

You dont massage it with the powerhead current and you definitely dont stick it into a smaller tank :duh: Honestly, just stop trying to recover, its not working. You clearly have no idea what you are talking about so just stop. Like...just stop.

That is my input take it or leave it, if u follow my input, just make sure the current is not too powerfull unless u want ur fish to stick to the glass wall.
In the wild there's always current, they don't need our hands to fix themselves
