On the difficulty of correctly identifying your Goonch. (Bagarius)

I had a group imported in 2005, that were about 5" and never grew much bigger, and even the ones I sold, after a year, stayed about the same size.

Another group about 2010, I had about 30 of them, tiny, about 2-3", they were cute little buggers, but also slow growing despite how much they ate. Both of the above groups shared a rounder appearance headshape, and lack the marbled, speckled spots.

2 groups I got last year, over 80 pieces, from India direct, which I then shipped out all around the world, have a flatter head, and heavy mottling over body, but a few of them lack the heavy spotting. I have 3 still, 2 at 23, 24" now, heavy spotting. One that is 19" only, with much less patterns, grew much slower.

This group I recently got and sold, over 30 pieces, some have round head,

Wes, I would greatly appreciate it if you could share pics of the three big ones that you have. I strongly suspect that your two speckled ones are what I would call B. bagarius, the highland giant, and the one without spots is what I would call B. yarrelli, the lowland giant. Good info is hard to come by, and I consider anything that you offer to be as good as gold. :)

Very interesting read. This has been something that's annoyed me for quite a while. A few years ago I tried finding the scientific name of the giant goonch and about half of the sources said yarreli and the other half said bagarius

Yeah this is turning into a nightmare to understand! What makes this deal really confusing is that it appears as though there actually is a B. bagarius and there actually is a B. yarrelli and both of them are giants!

Id also love to see a pic of a lica in tank!

Me too man. In fact, I'm pretty sure there was a member who had one during the last goonch rush back in March. I don't remember who, though. It was black and looked almost identical to the one I just posted though!

Collection Point is Thailand.

Video of the Goonch.

That is Bagarius yarrelli, the lowland giant. It will grow fast and get very large.

Everyone seems to keep their goonches in cooler water regardless of species. Is this necessary with yarelli? How different are the water conditions in the lowlands?

It doesn't appear as though they need the cooler water, though mid 70s won't hurt them. There is no data available for larger specimens.
