Okay, so FINALLY pulled the trigger and bought a 270 fiberglass tank with windows from pentair ($850 shipped), a laguna max flo 2400, and will be using an old 75 gallon as a sump. Stock: arowana, 2x BD stingrays, 1x VATF, 1x pbass, and 3-6x dats. My question is this is my first ever sump, I don't want to do bio balls/sponges due to not wanting to make a tower. Would K1 or ceramic rings be the better option in terms of initial cost and maintenance cost? I'm just thinking dump a ton of ceramic rings in there and call it a day. If so best seller on ebay to buy good ceramic rings from?

I got my ceramic rings on Amazon. I ordered 10lbs for about $30, but the offer up to 55lb orders. The seller was AquaCity. My 10lbs is two large bags and it is all I plan to use in my 55 gallon sump for my 220.

I think ceramic rings will be better if you want room in the sump for other stuff, like pothos plants or a refugium of some sort. K1 takes up a lot of space as a fluidized media.

How about some pot scrubbies? it can be packed in ur sump and not piled up. Just another thought. Cheap as well.

Cost wise k1 is more expensive but works well and u will need a pump to mobilize them. Need to the space as already mentioned.

Yes go with pond matrix for submerged media....don't bother with a fluidized media like k1 it's self cleaning but loud and is the most expensive bio filtration to set up

If u want less maintenance. ...get a carbon filter and set up a drip system on it since these tanks aren't hard to drill

1. 55 lbs of this: http://www.amazon.com/Aquacity-Premier-Ceramic-Filter-Aquarium/dp/B013QGF2CU

2. 55 lbs of this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Bio-Ceramic...reef-canister-filter-/251810953178?rmvSB=true

3. 5 gallons of pond matrix

Any opinions?

They all seem to be about the same price. I don't really think you can go wrong with any of them. I don't think you'll need that much for a 75 gal sump though. Like I mentioned before, I am going to use 10lbs of ceramic rings in a 55 gal sump. I think 20lbs will do you just fine.

I love lava rock, and pillow stuffin, with a nice micron filter, and socks

You obviously won't need all of this but it's nice to have extra especially if u have other tanks not to mention if u buy 1 gallon it's like $32 as opposed to $100 for 5.3
