This is the ten gallon sump, that runs my 60 jack tank, and 50 rainbow tank. The 3 gallon bucket has 3 inches of lava rock topped, with 3 inches of pillow stuffing, a drip plate and curtly using a filter media bag for large partical removal only. 50 percent of the bucket bottom is cut out in alternating slits. Have an air stone, and heater directly below bucket two inches of lava rock in tank bottom. And pump has micron filter in housing. I surrounded the pump in pillow stuffing, to slow clogging, and it's woked great a whole week and the floss nearest the pump was still white
You obviously won't need all of this but it's nice to have extra especially if u have other tanks not to mention if u buy 1 gallon it's like $32 as opposed to $100 for 5.3

Go for 100 micron socks. Buy atleast 6. You can have 2 in the sump and 4 that get cleaned and swapped out with the dirty ones. Washing machine, no soap....a few cycles.
As far as media. I like ceramic and or k1 moving bed style.
On my 225g i have ceramic. On my 450g I have both.

That's why I'm going with 200 microns on my new sump. Plus, I'm going to put some poret foam after the socks to add in mechanical and biological filtration.
