Nice catches all around. Every time I go hallibut fishing I wind up pulling up a skate, the boat captain allways cuts them loose.
heres the 130 my dad caught. hes 6'7" 230 +- and so am I so if the fish look a tad smaller than i claim... thats why. lol
Glad Im not the only the only one puling up big skates, 5' is the smallest Ive brought up. That would be very cool to do it on a beach instead of a boat.
Bat rays are a pain to clean but if you take the time to clean the wings the flesh can be ground and used to make patties, the flavor is quite good, much like shark mixed with scallops.
Guppy is right about the taste, in fact many Chinese food places will illegally sell ray as scallops.
I guess since Ive seen and caught so many rays are not thrilling for me. Then again we mostly have Atlantic/southern stingrays in the gulf which tend to just stay on the bottom when hooked and its like dragging in a rug! I did hook a really large cow ray and it soared about 5ft in the air...that was cool!

LMFAO @ 130 pound ray. Put that on a scale and maybe a few people will believe you.
It make you feel like more of a man to hike up your sleeves and cram your fingers into a ray's eye sockets? If you plan on releasing, learn to handle your fish. Sure, you might get your hands dirty, but I don't worry about breaking a nail when I go fishing.

second, Breaking a nail? ive worked harder in one day than you ever will kid. show me wear my sleaves are rolled up... and eye sockets? really? my fingers are not even close to its eye sockets. we pick 'em up by the blow holes.
