No... We're talking about diffusing the water flow not limiting it here. Instread of it coming out of one pipe, it's coming out of a thousand little holes (very course sponge). Bffles slow down the forcce of the return water.

if it is not alot of resistence no it wont hurt really try to more divert the flow though more tubing to add the the head height that will slow it down

This will slow the volume of water down too, not what we're looking for (or he could just use a smaller pump / one less filter).
