Any big Black Widows? How big do they get? Once while stranded on the side of the freeway, I sat on a barricade looked down, and right next to my leg was a black widow the size of a golfball!! I'd like to grow one for size, any suggestions?

Cool, they are quiet sneaky little buggers.

If you want to grow out a big one, you need to overfeed it to the max. One prey item a day. You need to have a female. The reason why the one you saw was so large was because it was pregnant. They really aren't that big unless they are filled with eggs. So you probably want to get 'your' black widow a mate so she will get even larger.

Below is one of my female black widows, she finished off a male. The male is at the bottom, rolled into a ball of web. She ate him last night.

Allright! Lots of food and a mate, can I keep anything with her? I have a bare 20 gal I was thinking about keeping a praying mantis in, I wouldnt think they would get along.

NO, NOTHING WITH HER!

One of the two will eat the other. If the widow made a web, the mantis is gone(food). If the widow did not make a web, the widow is the mantises snack.

Keep a female widow in the 20g solo nothing else with her except a male.

Jeez dude a golf ball?...A bite from a black widow that size would probably mess you up really badly.You were really lucky.

My first thought was to catch it, but like I said I was stranded on the side of the road, I've seen some REALLY ugly spider bites so mabe I AM lucky I didn't mess with it. Still going keep more BWs though,
