Once thought extinct cichlid found

That an intresting point. They had to know it was rare when they were first collected. If the pair breed once it most likely breed many times. It will be funny if they were sold to some petshop and there are hundreds around just no one knows what they have.

I didn't even think of that. If it was rare they should've took the parents of the twelve along with them.
I saw an article on this a few months ago on practicalfishkeeping and the researchers had been trying to find a lady for them.

Typical stupidity - What happened to those 12, and the parents of those 12? This is what happens when zoos, and other "secular" establishments are too stingy with sharing information and breeding stock. The same is true of many other animals, and even plants.

+1, their probably still in some one's fish tank. Those offspring might have even bred again.

Because that fish is ancient - and not a good candidate for breeding.

They really need to track down the breeders and other fish they mentioned.

I was actually thinking because that particular fish looks horrible. Don't know if that's it's natural shape but it looks like that fish in the picture has a curved spine. I wouldn't imagine the tail is supposed to be facing down like that... and like u said, it does look ancient.

That is its natural shape. Unfortunately in Madagascar there was a dam built . It dried up most of the important eco system for many fish species as well as over farming is eroding the dirt that was once flourishing with jungle which is causing everything to dry up. Many Madagascar species are true gems . They look different and require different habitat's . I personally think this species is beautiful. That male pictured did have a mate but unfortunately killed its mate and that's why they were in a panic . These fish can live up to 20 year if taken care of properly. I personally am very excited to see the progress these people are trying very hard
