Once you go sand, you don't go back!

That's exactly the same sand I saw at Petsmart. But it's almost powder like in the bag. I worry it may clog my filter (Penguin BioWheel). Any thoughts on that?

What type of sand are you talking about? My fav is Tahitian moon sand, very black and very fine. wonderful sand, makes fishes color darker and more intense. Heavy enough not to be easily stirred up.

In my experience plants grow better in sand. Much better.

:iagree: Definitely!!! :D

Sand is AWESOME!!! Switched to sand over six years ago and have never looked back. Just all around better look, ease of maintence, and it seems the fish enjoy it more! :D

how do you vac sand? doesn't it just go throguh the siphon?

Normally you don't need to vac the sand. Just run the python across the top and it sucks up everything. :) You can later take your finger or a stick/rod and stir the sand, or keep fish that will turn it over for you. Pool filter sand helps out greatly as well, love it. Play sand sucks. Definitely go for pool filter if you can.

I use a surface water return to a under tank sump so I really don't know if it would pose a problem or not. I would say that as long as your water intake isn't right on the bottom there should be no problem. Tahitian Moon sand is heavy enough not stay in suspension at all. A fish could stir some up for a moment and it might get sucked into the filter but I would think this would be rare. The sand is heavy even though it is fine. You would have to judge this for your own uses. I have to say that once it settles out it doesn't seem to ever be in the water colum any more.

Interesting...any experience with it changing the PH levels? Read some sand does...My filter may be ok then. This is TEMPTING!! lol

Most sands now available to aquarists won't affect the pH or chemistry of your water. There are certain sands made from crushed coral, which will alter your pH. Most of the time it will say on the bag if it will after your pH. Most play/poolfilter sands won't mess with it though. :)

Ok Thanks! Is sand ok for Plecos and loaches? Just wondering if there are any fish that sand is NOT good for.

The only fish I can think of that sand would be bad for would be dead fish . . .
