Re: Bio Filtration. Biological Filtration is basically a place in the sump/filter where the bacteria that break down the Ammonia and Nitrite can cling to. My multi-tier wet drys provides a LOT of space for the filter media, I have maybe close to 100 scrubbies and tons of other media in there. I will try to take updated pictures because I took out almost all the stuff inside and just left the DW. I also net out poop and dirt at least twice a day. My pond water is so clean and clear, I can almost drink out of it! My nitrates are around 10ppm--unbelievable, don't try it at home...hehe. I have around 500G worth of blue drums and perform massive water changes weekly--the water is used to water the garden plants. I don't even use dechlor because I just drip the water replacement in (at times it takes two days to refill).

how is the ray?
Thanks for asking, the Ray has started to EAT, thank God. :headbang2

Gave him cut up frozen fish and small pieces of shrimp. I've been feeding it at least twice a day. It's a cat and mouse game, because I need to throw in pellets and dried bw for the koi, Gourami and ID sharks to eat and then run over to the other side and feed the ray, if the ray doesn't eat fast enough the ID sharks will come over and start stealing her food. Once I run over to feed the ray, I'd have to contend with the knife fish and the giant arowana staring at me saying "are you gonna feed me or you want me to bite you?" So, I need to feed the CKF first and then it will swim away and once the aro faces the other way immediately put my arm and tongs down to feed the ray. The other day I didn't see that the aro was facing straight at me and it was his fasting day, when I put my arm down, KAPLAN, he torn my hand into shreds--a little exaggeration, but still it hurt.

I've used the tongs as a weapon against the ID sharks, I've been very mean to them because I've been favoring the ray. This is kinda my confessional post. They're just pigs and are never full and when they start "sucking" on the ray, I panic and hurt them with my tongs.:(

Mighty nice of you to say Jakob. I really just got the confidence to do the pond when I saw this site and saw that people actually already did carry out my crazy idea. MFK rocks!

Good to hear the ray is eating.

Nice new ray will make your pond look great :)

After

Taken out EVERYTHING and left just the driftwood and some red bricks to hold the pumps in place.

Again, I've realized that all those stuff are not needed and worse, presents prime real estate for poop, dirt and uneaten food to hide in. My water is now crystal clear and I am able to constantly scoop out poop with my DIY pond net.

Test Kits

Tongs (Arowana kept biting my fingers thinking they were part of the fish until I "discovered" this wonderful device called Tongs)

6 x 65G = 390
2 x 50G = 100
490G of drums!
Note: This is water FROM the pond.

Water is pumped out through the Rio pump that is attached to a PVC that is attached to a 1" hose that is led to this row of blue drums. Notice the DIY poop and dirt scooper, ordinary net attached to a PVC via water proof duct tape.

After water change, I bring in the garden hose and drip the water in, notice how its quite a drop down and the entry point of the water falls right into the sump outlet which aerates the water substantially to take care of some of the chlorine. I don't use any dechlor as the minimal amount going in I believe is not significantly harmful for the fish.

This is the frozen scad:

The aro takes 2-4 pcs of this at a time, am trying to see if he can live with eating every other instead of everyday.

Repacked individually for single serving so that you only thaw what you will feed.

A031.jpg

Mixed feeds of two kinds of floating pellets with dried tubifex worms for the kois, ID sharks and Giant Gouramis.

A bit too boring for me, will dispose of the RTC. The only interaction that happens is when it's eating, might as well just put a log in there as its replacement. :naughty:

Welcome the newest addition to the family...
