Thanks Hoplo. Unfortunately since I got them that's exactly the way they seem to feed but I plan on decreasing stock in the tank just in case they're being put off by more aggressive eaters.

Im still in the growout stage with my three ebjds, and I noticed that they were getting easily outcompeted for sinking pellets, so I kept using flakes and they do fine, as well as floating bits of freeze dried krill. Since then theyre my best eaters, knock on wood. Well, second best to my chocolates, but thats no contest, the chocolates are pigs with fins.
 
My three year old EBJD is only 4"

He barely ever eats anything. I'm surprised he's lived this long. I've tried everything from live black worms to minced clams.
 
I tried an EBJD a few years ago. He was afraid of guppies. I tried a few things, but he did not live long.
