One greedy Delhezi

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Tried to eat a whole smelt when the Mastacembelus dayi stole it!

The Del measured about 20cm so you get how big the Dayi is...
Atleast it got some of the frozen fish. Hat delhezi has nice pattern by the way.
Agreed. Very nice patterns Xeno Xeno . Beautiful del. and sweet video!

M. Dayi are on my list of eels outside of a fire eel. They are supposed to be relatively interactive, visible eels compared to some (since many hide all the time)... Do you find yours is?

Looks like he did the Del a favor. That looked to be a bit much for her! ;)

Hey,
yea M.dayi is a "visible" species compared to M.armatus favus which I also keep.
But the bigger the Dayi gets the more time he spends in this hideout which is a piece of driftwood big enough to to hide his whole body.

Since I moved the Dayi into the big tank it's not reacting to me in front of the tank anymore.

Oh believe me the Dels are able to swallow these frozen fish in one piece!
At least the big ones there are actually 5 Delhezis in there, 2 with about 20cm in length and 3 with 12 to 15cm.

I bet the eels love it. I know that it's in an eel's nature to hide, so I can't really blame them. But when I have polys, already bottom dwellers that are eel-shaped, I don't really want to add more bioload if I won't see the fish much. We shall see!

Wow now that's a good question... to be honest I don't have a clue how much the wood was.
Most pieces are quite old already.

With this tank there is quite a big problem:
It's dark, it's calm and it's positioned next to a door so I can't keep shy species in there.
I had to move out my Dats and my Silverdollars because of this.

With my KKP I've got some fish that will get a good size but honestly I am just waiting to sell the silverdollars to move the KKP back in the 120gal.
That would leave the open space just to a single Toxotes blythii.

I guess you get what I'm saying.
I'm missing a calm, peaceful, not that shy species in this tank.
I thought about Ctenolucius hujeta, the size would be approriate but even though my bichirs are all not wild caught and do not know live fish as food it would be a little too risky for me to add those characin.
PLUS they tend to "dart" when scared as the silverdollars do, right?

Right now there is one person selling 7 M.dayi.
I thought about getting a female but first they are way too small for this tank and second I honestly do not think my big male will accept other big spiny eels.
So maybe I'll get a female for the 120gal.

Many people told me to add Satanoperca since they are basically all I want (good size, peaceful) but I don't know about that since the 5 Delhezis will groß to at least 25cm and with Polypterus delhezi I have a bottom dwelling bichir not such as Polypterus senegalus which mostly spend their time "floating" (keeping 5 in an 80gal, beautiful fish but I wouldn't keep them in a tank without plants anymore, same for Erpetoichthys calabaricus).

When looking at cichlids most species are a big no-go due to their territorial behaviour.
Adding Astronotus would've been a BAD idea and I'm glad I didn't do it.

But right now I've got one quite rare species in my sight:
Petenia splendida
I could get a group of 4-5 "red spotted" specimen for a good price.
They are said to be VERY calm and peaceful cichlids sometimes the behaviour is even described as "shy".

Considering everything I read about Petenia splendida this species seems to be exactly what I am looking for.

What do you think?

Clouded Archer is a cool fish! I like those better then Snooks. Over all same shape I guess. I think you could get a lot out of the Geos, most of them get along well in groups and I don't think you'd have issues with your Delz and them getting along. Not one for scientific nomenclature myself. lol
