Paratilapia polleni, Bleeker Cichlid from Madagascar

Those are available in the LFS here.

I think availability on most fish varies by location

Rallysman has nailed it. I can see Aussie lungfish playing and I can catch saratoga anytime I want so they arent rare for me. I would gladly pay AUD$1000 for a Red Tail Cat if I could find one.....

Well i dont know if this would count but there was a Platinum arro for sale for something like £200,000 .I'm not saying arro's are rare but there must have been something wicked about this fish for such a high price...I'm sure an expert will be along to explain......

I read that there are two kinds, small and large spot which are different species, can you get both of these (I prefer large spot) if so I am going to be pissed :irked:. Or are yours crosses of each, which I also read is likely to happen if not kept seperat. Either way I am still pissed that you guys can get them, I can't and they are so cool.

I would pay $250 easily, no second thoughts for a RTC and more for a TSN.

Synodontis Granulosus:headbang2 :headbang2 :headbang2

Considered one of the rarest catfish in the world, some reference books do not even recognize it! It lives 200+ feet below the surface of lake Tanganyika in Africa. Since it lives so deep and is not a schooling fish they are not caught often. Only between 100-200 caught a year, and most do not come to the US. I have heard about 12 a yr come in to all of America. When first discovered there were only about 12 coming out of the lake total and they went for over $2000 a fish and they only get about 10inch long! Now the price is commonly about $350 and my LFS HAS ONE! but I do not have the proper set up for it right now and do not want to buy a fish at that price and kill it.

I can get both species at a lfs for 26.99$ they have 2 tanks full of juvies i would get a couple myself but iam overstocked already.

yeah, rare in the hobby, well, there are many fish rare, because they've never been collected or kept in the hobby, i.e. toxotes blythii, I've never seen it documented in anyone's tank.

some fish are rare because their wild population is threatened or even extinct, such as the devil's hole pup fish, and some other pup fish, its considered extinct in the wild, there are a few breeding groups around the country in various public aquariums.

many fish, like the giant paddle fish in China, which i've posted pictures of in the Rare Fish from Rare fish thread, is only encountered once every few years, besically extinct or no longer a self sustaining wild population remaining, I call that rare.

Or a rare color morph, which are abbarrent variations of the norm, such as a xanthic aussie lung fish, or albino barramundi. However, its like an albino person, how often do you see them? In the pet trade they're sought after, in human terms, ummm...kinda weired

rare in certain countries, like snake heads are food fish in many countries, just rare in this country, because they're banned, like RTC in australia, they're so common everywhere else, they breed them in Thailand by the millions!

just my 2 cents :)
