If you were going to give an 8" Red Devil one tankmate, what would you choose that he could possibly get along with or not try to kill?

Other than that, maybe a large pleco?
A rock 
Or one of those Rainbow Reef battery operated fish for the pool
It's really going to depend, I know there was a guy on here awhile who tried a pleco and the RD (or Midas, can't remember) killed it.

Had a 8 inch devil of a devil. He killed many a cichlid. Wife fell in love with an oscar so I but a barrier up in the tank. The rd tried hard to kill that oscar through the barrier for months, but eventually the oscar grew and knocked the barrier down (according to our housesitter). We tried to put the barrier up (cheap petsmart thing) but they would push and shove to find away around it. Often we would come home to both fish on the same side (rd'd side). We eventually took the barrier out and the fish lived happily ever after.
So maybe if your unsure of a tankmate, try the barrier technique so the fish can get used to eachother. Inadvertantly worked for me.

I had a RD who killed everything I ever put in the tank with it. other RD texas, 3 catfish and a med pleco. GL
ime ive never had any trouble with big cichlids bothering very small ones like convicts or even some africans if your into those.
If the tank is big enough that is. How big is the tank anyway?
