One Tankmate

Trial and error mate, their crazy fish, especially if you have one thats a bit of a nutter.

Started out with a 55 at home that housed the red devil, two baja reds, and a 10" black shark. At this time the cichlids were 2.5 to 3 inches. Once the red devil reached 4" he killed all his tankmates. I added a 4" Jaguar, and my wife brought in a 4" Oscar without knowing what was going on with the RD. The RD quickly started beating the snot out of the Jag and Oscar so I divided the tank. The RD would force his way through and get to the other two. Now I have moved the RD to my office in a 55 and just trying to find something to put in that he will allow to live with him. He is a natural killer though, I have put crawfish in there with him, hoping he would eat them, and he's satified with only killing them, but will not eat them. Iwould just like to have something in the tank besides just him. The weird thing is that his color stays real drab unless he has a victem in the tank with him, then he colors up nicely as long as he's on the hunt. Trying to find a tankmate is on the edge of crualty at the present.

Yeah with his track record, you can't keep anything in there with him. He would need a much bigger tank to consider a tankmate.

gibbiceps or L196 literatus should do the job or even just a common or garden pleco. I keep both of these with an ARTC so they gotta be up to the job for a RD. Get a pleco or get an algae scraper.

I'd try a jardini and dovii!
