One very strange little cat..........TSNxNiger

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Love your new baby monster cat..he is beautiful..lots of luck with him... he will be awesome to watch as he grows..

oh yea, any update? love to see him again.

Does anyone know how these F1 hybrids (especially from different genera) are being produced? Are they stripping sperm and eggs from adults and combining them. It seems unlikely these combinations would mate naturally. Also, are the offspring sterile or are F2 generations possible?

I tend to like plant hybrids but not animals all that much, though they can certainly be beautiful and interesting. With plants you often get hybrid vigor in the F1 cross, but often genetic weaknesses show up in the F2 cross. When you start crossing organisms with brains (even if relatively primitive in the case of fish) it seems like it might cause behavioral problems in some cases?

Maybe its just a worry that someone turned a gentle O. niger into a potential killing machine!!:WHOA: Neat fish though!

The process is striping. You're on the money on that one. They have produced many different hybrids trying to figure out the ones with vigor and higher immune systems, but some are complet failures that have shortened life spans, and very weak immune systems. They actually hormone inject, take sperm and egg samples until they know which ones are ready. These are mainly produced in asia. This leads me to think that there might be low genetic diversity in the animals they are producing. I know most tsn, and rtc parent species that you see available here in the USA actually come from asia. If you want one from SA look for the ones labeled wild rtc. That's why there has been a big increase in rtc, and tsn deformities lately. Low genetic diversity, and low culling rates. Someone in Asia is making a killing producing these though.

Let's mix a titanic pleco with a yarelli! Still waiting to see a yarelli x something hybrid, there are rumors of some yarelli hybrids, but we haven't seen anything definitive yet. Just think a giant armored yarelli stalking down every piece of drift wood, and algae it can find!
