Could it be that other fish in the bag were picking at the fins of the DOA before you got the package? There may be more likely possibilities but I would not rule that out.

Nevermind.

I'd hazard a guess that fish was thrashed before he was bagged up since it looks like scales are missing and fins are torn up.

I hope you quarantined the other fish that arrived just in case it is something bacterial or viral in the vendors system.

i would pretty much never order fish online
might as well go to a local fish store and see if they can order the fish for you
Ordering fish online is fine, around 60% of the fish I have now have come from ebay, TUIC, COTA, Max Cichlids, Wetspot, DRAF, and various other random local vendors. I've ordered close to 150 fish online and have only had a total of 5 DOA's. Just pay attention to shipping conditions (weather), how your delivery people regularly treat packages, and reviews of vendors when getting fish shipped, and figuring out how/when to ship safely will help you prevent losses.

I agree.
I have made orders from almost all the same vendors, and never been disappointed.
I stopped buying from LFSs when I lost trust in their ability to provide, or to acquire pure, non-hybrid species.

I usually like to buy at the store so that I can see what I’m getting first, but if it’s something that I cannot get easily at the store I’ll get it online in a heartbeat. I have had good and bad experiences online.

Ammonia burn can occur that quick- people who fish out here can have a fish that looks like that within 24 hours of being in the holding tank- just saying from a fishing hobby experience- sloshing transport from boat to car- it does look like this however it does look like being netted just was its last straw on stress factor When being sloshed around in a box- several of the fish expire when we bring them in and throw them into the holding tank on the boat. Let alone it being African and already in a stressful holding tank I’m not surprised it just gave up once it was in the bag
