Imo as long as you keep clean water and keep the temp up he should heal right up. I've seen my cichla heal up from all sorts of injuries and I never use medicine.

X2, currently have the same thing going on with my Lil Xingu my bigger zullies shredded his tail into three sections all the way down to the base if tail wc and salt is really all you will need to fix

Finally caught a yawning pic! Haha it rarely happens to me but the tail is growing back nicely as you can see w/ salt, mela, pima and 50% WC every 2 days, he eats frozen bloodworm now and possibly ate a guppy or 2 today (which I bred) so they were sanitary. What do you guys think about using Jack Dempsey's as dithers for cichla? I don't like the typical silver dollars as dithers route.. idk they look derpy to me haha
