Opah, The Only Known Warm-Blooded Fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I never claimed fish are universally endothermic, just some of them. And if you include the next sentence of the quote: "Mammals and birds are the only extant universally endothermic groups of animals. Certain lamnid sharks, tuna and billfishes are also endothermic."

The mechanisms of heat production differ between mammals, birds, and various fishes. Other fish aren't endothermic throughout their whole bodies. The opah produces heat through swimming and metabolic activity, just like some of the other endothermic fish, but with different muscles. They have a sort of insulated gill structure, where warm blood heats the cool blood coming from the gills. Other endothermic fish do this in parts of their bodies other than the gills.

Here's the journal article for the OP's video: http://www.researchgate.net/profile...s_guttatus/links/555840e308ae6943a874c67b.pdf

I didn't say that you claimed that

anyways, this is hilarious. so the article is basically confirming my original statement I posted

those sharks and tunas are not typical warm blooded animals. they have endothermic capabilities to a limited area in their bodies and can only do it temporarily. mainly to hunt

whereas typical warm blooded animals like birds and mammals are endothermic throughout their bodies indefinitely.

which is why the opah is so extraordinary and special because it is a true warm blooded animal in the same way mammals and birds are.

so it isn't exactly wrong to say that a tuna or a white shark is endothermic, generally.

but if you wanna get really technical, they are regional endothermic animals. they don't get warm throughout their bodies (only specific internal regions to serve its purpose) and they can't stay that way for long

but thanks for doing the research I already knew but was too lazy nor cared enough to do myself

I have not heard about the need to return to warmer waters in the other fish. Could you provide a source? I couldn't find where you saw that in the article I posted.

I didn't take that to mean anything different for the opah, as all fish that forage into an environment colder than they can sustain themselves in must return to an acceptable temperature. The opah has its requirements as well, though they are colder than the other endothermic fishes. However, there are fish that can go colder than an opah, but they use different methods to cope with temperature.

The article I posted was referenced, and I could not find anything in it that confirmed this. Furthermore, none of the articles I have seen on other fish (we just covered this in fish biology) have mentioned the need to return to warmer environments as a restriction different from other fishes. The only thing that comes close is this video; which is an automated reading of a news article. I'm wondering if it's true or if this was an extrapolation made during the shift from science to media.

You asked the questions, we deliverered. Just say thank you next time so i don't have to read 2 paragraphs of gibberish that amounts to "I'm calling bs"
